July was a whirlwind of activity with David Ceci’s play ‘Unfamiliar, A Maidstone Tale”. I enjoyed directing it, right to the very end, with some cuts we made that were incorporated in the last two performances. It will be interesting to see where this goes and how it informs the rest of the play.
I read for playwrights Evan Edwards and Robin Rice at New Ambassadors hosted by David Adam Gill. Both plays were intriguing and it was nice to be back with David and his team. Actors always hope our brief encounter with new material is helpful to the writer. It’s fun for us as well.
There have been a nice bit of auditions lately and I have honed my technique at the Actors Equity Casting site to get a real time, but even when I have not, going in person is an option to see if there are open slots and I’ve been lucky and gotten seen that way too. I hope this open window of new plays being done continues, and the audition opportunities follow.
My goal this summer was to work on In An Instant, and I regretfully admit I have not ~ but there’s August and so I am hopeful I have the time I need to sit and go to it. In addition, I plan to write a monologue for The Playground Experiments Faces Of America which needs to be by the 18th.
I have time.
And back to Square Dancing every Tuesday evening. It is so much fun and honestly, I am tired when it’s over – as much mentally as physically because you have no idea what the caller is going to call. There is no prepared choreography and everything is in the moment, so you have to be on your toes all the time. Seems easy, but it’s a really good challenge to maintain going the right way so as not to crash into your partner!
